The country series was the analogue of the pop series in almost every way. Find some really
obscure records that current stars recorded before they were anybody (and usually much to their
embarassment), and couple them with some country-like songs from unknown studio artists. Then mix
and match these songs in different combinations so that you can get a bunch of album issues out of the
same material. Moreover, release the same albums on different labels with different cover slicks, and
maybe people won't notice and they'll buy the same album twice (even reissue the same album on the
same label with a different cover slick!).
What else is there to say? I guess only that despite their best efforts to put out throw-away junk records,
a few of these are actually sought after by completist collectors. Go figure.
The 600 Country series initially used both the full color and the black and white mono Design label. Stereo counterparts used the Stereo Spectrum label
Later, the series switched to the red labels, as did other Design series. By late 1967, the mono issues were abandoned in favor of compatible stereo, as with the rest of the industry.
Early issues in the series used a generic back that listed the first several albums in the series. Later, with the shift to the red label, the jacket back was changed to a generic country back with a photo collage. Some of the earlier albums were reissued later with the red label and a redesigned cover. |
