Stereo was demonstrated on disc as early as November, 1957, but for most record labels, stereo
didn't happen on record until 1958 or 1959. Kapp did not release stereo records until very late in 1958,
and first indicated stereo by using the same catalog numbers as the mono counterparts, for example,
KL-1108 mono became K-1108-S stereo.
This continued until about April, 1959, when Kapp switched to numbering all stereo releases in a new
KS-3000 series whose numbers bore no resemblance to the mono counterparts. For example, KL-1129
mono became KS-3014 stereo. Kapp started this changeover at about KL-1129, but went back and
re-numbered over a dozen earlier stereo albums.
The KS-3000 series continued throughout the remainder of 1959, but the lack of numerical
correspondence between mono and stereo versions of the same album proved even more confusing
than the albums having the same number. Finally, about February, 1960, Kapp jumped the 3000 series'
sequence from 3063 to 3176 to make the last three digits of the mono and stereo catalog numbers
correspond.
This page is a cross-reference to the early KS-3000 series by stereo number.
The earliest Kapp stereo label (far left) was used primarily for the first stereo issues that used the K- 1000-S format, issued between late 1958 and the spring of 1959. About April of 1959, Kapp started the new KS-3000 numbering sequence by renumbering about a dozen previous stereo releases. Kapp switched label designs to the "starburst" label around June, 1959, so the remainder of the early 3000 series stereo albums had the "starburst" label. | ||
At far left, the special Christmas label used for Christmas albums during the 1959 holiday season. This label was not reused in later years. Labels such as shown at near left, or later labels, are later pressings of the early 3000 series stereo albums. Original pressings of the early stereo albums had one of the other labels shown here. |
