During the 1958-1960 period covered on this page, stereo was introduced. For Kapp, this was quite
a mess as far as catalog numbers went. Kapp did not release stereo records until very late in 1958, and
first indicated stereo by using the same catalog numbers as the mono counterparts, for example,
KL-1108 mono became K-1108-S stereo.
This continued until about April, 1959, when Kapp decided that numbering system was too confusing,
and switched to numbering all stereo releases in a new KS-3000 series whose numbers bore no
resemblance to the mono counterparts. For example, KL-1129 mono became KS-3014 stereo. Kapp
started this changeover at about KL-1129, but went back and retro-numbered earlier stereo albums (for
example, K-1108-S noted above now became KS-3002).
The KS-3000 series continued throughout the remainder of 1959, but the lack of numerical
correspondence between mono and stereo versions of the same album proved even more confusing
than the albums having the same number. Finally, about February, 1960, Kapp jumped the 3000 series'
sequence from 3063 to 3176 to make the last three digits of the mono and stereo catalog numbers
correspond.
Part 8 of this discography is a cross-reference of the early KS-3000 catalog numbers with their KL-1100
mono counterparts.
Up until June, 1959, or about KL-1128, Kapp album issues still used the original dark maroon label with the silver edge band. Promotional labels for all label designs on this page used the brown and white promo label with the same design as this first label (see illustration on previous page). Mono (far left) and stereo (near left) labels differed slightly.
About June, 1959, Kapp changed label to a black design with silver print with a blue edge band and a brown and black "starburst" design ranging into the blue edge band. The mono version (far left) had both the label name and the Kapp "K" logo in white, while the stereo version (near left) had these in yellow. The stereo version also had "STEREO" on either side of the logo around the top edge.
All Christmas albums issued during the 1959 holiday season used a special Christmas label with red and green print on a white background. The label had "Merry Christmas" in red bending around the top edge, with green holly around the remainder of the edge. Stereo versions (near left) had "Stereo" written twice flanking the green "K" logo just under "Merry Christmas," while for the mono versions (far left), this area was blank.
About February, 1960, Kapp again changed label designs, simplifying the busy "starburst" design to a black label with silver print and a lighter blue edge band. The label name was at the top in white caps, with small "K" logos at the nine o'clock position in yellow-and-black and in the three o'clock position in red-and-black. The stereo version designated that by a box below the label name with "STEREO" (near left), while for the mono version (far left), that area was blank. |

Note: About June, 1959, Kapp changed the label from the first label (maroon with silver
edge ring) to the second label (black with blue edge ring and a brown "starburst" pattern). The issues
released after this point in time (and this catalog number to the 1180s) had the "starburst" label as the
original release label, although some earlier albums (such as 1126, released after the change) also had
the "starburst" label on the original issue. Some albums as late as 1184 are also known with the original
brown and silver edge ring label.

Note: About this point, Kapp changed the label from the second label (black with blue edge and brown "starburst") to the third label (black with blue edge, "K" logos and white "Kapp"). The changeover was not "clean", as some albums released with higher numbers but released before the change still have the old label, and some earlier numbers released after the change have the new label. For example, KL 1187 is known to have been released with the "old" label, while KL 1186 was issued with the new label.
