Louisiana Folklore Society/Folk-Lyric Album Discography

The following recordings were made by Dr. Harry Oster. Initially the albums were issued under Oster's Louisiana Folklore Society label. In late 1959, the name of the label was changed to the Folk-Lyric label. When the Folk-Lyric label became inactive after FL-126 in 1963, the Louisiana Folklore Society material was leased to other labels including Bluesville, Arhoolie, Storyland and others.

In the early 70's, the Folk-Lyric name and material was revived by Chris Strachwitz, owner of Arhoolie Records who used the name Folklyric (see discography on separate page).

To avoid confusion and maintain discographical sanity, the albums for the Louisiana Folklore Society are listed first, most of which were issued on other labels. Then the discography for Folk-Lyric will be listed, even though there is an overlap with the Louisiana Folklore Society albums.

There were many variations of the LFS and Folk-Lyric labels, as well as the labels for the leased releases. The gallery below illustrates some of these.

The first label (far left) was white with black print, with the catalog prefix "LSF" instead of "LFS." It was first issued on red vinyl. The black LFS label is far center left, with the red LFS label near center left. LFS A-7 was issued on the Folkways label (near left).
The earliest Folk-Lyric label was black with no graphics laike the LFS label (far left). FL-108 was initially released with a dark green label (far center left), with the 1961 reissue an aqua color (near center left). FL-109 (near left) also had the black label, but with the label name at the top.
More different variations of the Folk-Lyric black label.
At far left, the Folk-Lyric yellow label. Far center left is yet another variation of the Folk-Lyric black label. LFS-20a (near center left) was issued on the Prestige International red label, while LFS-20b was released on the Prestige International orange label (near left)
LFS-23 and LFS-28 were issued on the Bluesville label (far left). LFS-25 was on the Heritage label (far center left), while LFS-26 was on the Prestige label (near center left). Several releases were on the Storyville label (near left).
LFS-35 was on the red Vanguard label (far left), with several issues on the Arhoolie label (far center left). LFS-39 was on the yellow UK Flyright label (near center left). Finally, at near left is a look at the red vinyl LSF-1201.
